The transport is the selling point
The Johan Cruijff ArenA sits in Amsterdam Zuidoost, next to Bijlmer ArenA station, which has direct trains from both Schiphol airport and Amsterdam Centraal. You can land, take one train, and be at the stadium — no changes, no buses, no taxi negotiation.
For a family arriving with luggage and tired children, that is worth more than any other single factor. It also means you can stay in the centre and treat the stadium as a short, predictable journey rather than an expedition.
Ajax and the youth question
Ajax's academy is among the most studied in world football, and for families whose children play seriously, the club is interesting beyond the ninety minutes. The stadium tour covers the club's history and the philosophy behind it, which lands better with a young player than a standard trophy-room walk.
Eredivisie fixtures are typically spread across the weekend, with European nights midweek. If you're travelling a long way, a trip that catches both a league game and a European fixture is a genuinely different experience from either alone.
Amsterdam with children is better than its reputation
The city's stag-party image is confined to a small and avoidable area. Elsewhere Amsterdam is flat, safe, canal-lined and full of things children like — a science museum built like a ship, a zoo in the middle of town, boats everywhere.
Flat matters. After Lisbon's hills or Liverpool's buses, a city where a pushchair rolls the whole way is a different kind of holiday.
The one real hazard is bicycles. Cycle lanes are roads, not decoration, and riders will not stop for a family drifting across one. Teach children to look before stepping off any kerb.
Practical notes
Book museums ahead. The major ones operate timed entry and the popular slots go, particularly at weekends and in school holidays.
Amsterdam's hotel stock is small relative to demand and prices climb steeply around big fixtures and events. This is a city where booking early genuinely saves money rather than just securing choice.
