The Dubai stopover, done properly
If you're flying between Australia and Europe you're passing through anyway. Two or three days here turns a brutal journey into two manageable ones.
Why break the journey at all
Australia to Europe is roughly twenty-four hours in the air plus connections. Done in one push with children, it costs you the first two days at the other end while everyone recovers. Broken in the middle, it becomes two flights of manageable length with a proper sleep between them.
Dubai is the natural break because so many routes already connect there. You are not detouring — you're getting off at a stop you were making anyway.
Two nights is the number
One night is not enough to recover and you'll spend it asleep. Three or more and you've turned a stopover into a second holiday with a second hotel bill. Two nights lets everyone sleep properly, see something, and get back on a plane feeling human.
Arriving early morning off an overnight flight is common. Book the hotel from the night before so the room is ready when you land, rather than waiting until afternoon check-in with exhausted children.
What to do with a day and a half
Pick one big thing and one easy thing. The big thing is usually the Burj Khalifa observation decks or a desert excursion; the easy thing is a mall, a beach, or the older creek-side quarter around Deira and Al Fahidi, which is a completely different city from the towers and worth an hour.
The Metro's Red Line runs along the main spine of the city and is cheap, clean and air-conditioned, which matters more than it sounds.
Do not over-programme. The entire point is arriving in Europe rested.
The heat is a planning constraint, not a detail
For much of the year the middle of the day is genuinely dangerous to spend outdoors, particularly with children. Locals structure life around early mornings and evenings, and visitors should too.
That makes indoor and after-dark attractions the backbone of a summer stopover, and it makes the winter months — when the weather is simply pleasant — a much better time to build a longer stop.
